Description: Colt Blackpowder Arms reproduction of the Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver, presented in a fitted, locking mahogany display case bearing the Colt emblem. The cylinder carries an engraved stagecoach scene. The principal serial number appears consistently on the barrel, frame and trigger guard, with the final three digits repeated on the butt and cylinder.

Included accessories: Fitted locking display case and key; brass plunger-style powder dispenser with funnel; metal powder flask with raised eagle design and two interchangeable spouts; bullet mould; quantity of .31-caliber lead balls; small Eley Bros. percussion-cap tin; and a wrench bearing a gold-tone reproduction of Samuel Colt's signature.

Observed markings: COLT'S PATENT; COLT'S PATENT No. 146; Engraved by W.L. Ormsby New York; ADDRESS SAM L COLT NEW YORK CITY; serial number 340146 on the barrel, frame and trigger guard; and 146 on the butt and cylinder.

Description: Ruger Old Army black powder revolver combining design elements associated with historic Colt and Remington percussion revolvers. Unlike the other revolvers in the collection, the Old Army is a modern Ruger design rather than a reproduction of one specific nineteenth-century model. The revolver has a smooth, unengraved cylinder and wooden grips bearing inset Ruger phoenix emblems.

Observed markings: RUGER OLD ARMY; FOR BLACK POWDER ONLY on both sides of the cylinder; serial number 145-74778; Ruger phoenix emblems in both grip panels; and a barrel-top warning identifying Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc., Southport, Connecticut.

Description: This shotgun is the collection's only antique cartridge firearm and its only non-muzzleloading piece. Its precise manufacturer and production date have not yet been authenticated. The shotgun has external hammers, double triggers and a break-open action. Decorative features include engraved lockplates, a game bird, a retriever and extensive carving on the fore-end, wrist and stock. The stock incorporates a particularly distinctive carved elk head, with the antlers extending forward along the wrist. A ribbed metal buttplate is attached with two screws. The right hammer is missing its fastening screw. The photographs should be consulted for the firearm's overall cosmetic condition and visible areas of wear.

Observed markings: Wm. PARKHURST on the left lockplate; Machine Made on the right lockplate; and engraved game bird and retriever motifs.

Family history: The present owner inherited the shotgun from his father, who had inherited it from an aunt. According to family history, she kept it loaded beneath her bed for protection. Above the bed hung an embroidered sampler bearing the words, 'God Helps Those Who Help Themselves.' This family account provides appealing provenance, although it does not independently establish the shotgun's manufacturer or date.
